Helmet and Protective Equipment
The CPSC advises wearing a bicycle helmet when riding a micromobility device. The helmet should meet an applicable safety standard, fit properly, sit level, and be fastened as its manufacturer directs. Replace a helmet after an impact or when the helmet manufacturer says it is no longer serviceable.
Closed-toe footwear with secure laces can improve grip and reduce the chance of loose material reaching a wheel. Avoid clothing, straps, or bags that can interfere with steering, brakes, or wheels. Gloves and additional protective equipment may be appropriate for the rider and conditions, but no equipment makes high speed or poor surfaces harmless.
Practise Before Entering Traffic
Use a flat, dry, permitted area away from vehicles and pedestrians. Start with the lowest suitable speed mode and enough open space to stop without reaching an obstacle.
- Mount and dismount. Learn where both feet go and how to step off without pulling the handlebar sideways.
- Start smoothly. Practise the required kick start or throttle procedure without sudden acceleration.
- Ride a straight line. Look ahead instead of down at the front wheel.
- Make wide, slow turns. Learn how steering and body position interact before attempting tighter turns.
- Brake progressively. Use the braking system exactly as described in the manual and learn how long the scooter needs to stop.

- Expect drivers and pedestrians not to see a small, quiet scooter.

Leave more space in darkness, rain, cold, or unfamiliar areas. If visibility, traction, or weather exceeds the scooter's instructions or your control, do not ride.
Braking, Hills, and Speed
Stopping distance changes with speed, total load, tire condition, road surface, slope, brake adjustment, and rider technique. Practise at low speed and increase only when the scooter remains predictable.
Approach hills conservatively. Climbing can reduce speed and battery reserve; descending can increase speed and braking demand. Do not exceed the manufacturer's slope guidance, coast with the scooter powered off unless specifically permitted, or rely on only one brake when the manual describes a combined technique.
Advertised maximum speed is not a target for every trip. Use a speed that fits the law, surface, visibility, traffic, and available stopping distance.
Ontario Rules for Electric Kick-Style Scooters
Ontario's electric kick-style scooter pilot is scheduled to run until November 27, 2029. Municipalities decide whether e-scooters are allowed locally and where they may operate.
Under the current provincial pilot, a qualifying electric kick-scooter has two wheels, a standing platform, no seat or basket, a motor not exceeding 500W, a maximum speed of 24 km/h on a level surface, a maximum vehicle weight of 45 kg, brakes, a bell or horn, lights, and side reflectors. Riders must be at least 16, riders under 18 must wear a bicycle helmet, and passengers and cargo are not allowed.
A seated 750W scooter should not be assumed to fall under that definition. Check the current provincial classification and municipal bylaw for the exact vehicle and route before riding.
After-Ride and Charging Checklist
- Turn the scooter off and let it return to the temperature range required by the manual.
- Check for new tire damage, looseness, impact marks, water, or unusual heat.
- Park where the scooter cannot block an exit, walkway, or accessibility route.
- Use only the original or manufacturer-approved battery and charger.
- Charge at room temperature in a dry place where you can see the device.
- Do not charge while sleeping or while nobody is home.
